The Summer Skin Prep Routine: Glow Before the Heat Hits

Summer doesn’t ease in — it shows up. One day you’re in a light jacket, the next you’re full humidity, full sun, and suddenly your skin is staging a protest. The secret to glowing all season? You prep before the heat hits. Think of it like prepping your wardrobe for a new season, you wouldn’t wait until August to find your SPF or figure out your skin is dry. Here’s exactly how to build a summer skin prep routine that sets you up for a real, lasting glow.

Meet the Experts

  • Micaela Bartash has been a Physical Assistant for over 9 years and Co-Founder at Contour Aesthetics + Wellness.
  • Julia Barabas is a Medical Aesthetician at Bar Beauty Medical, Toronto.
  • Dr. Louie Kim is a PhD chemical engineer and cosmetic chemist with over 40 years of formulation experience in both the Korean and Canadian skincare industries.

1. Leave the Exfoliator in Spring

A young woman in a bathrobe follows her skincare routine, washing her face in a bathroom.

It might be tempting to start from scratch with your summer skincare with a clean base, but that’s quite the opposite of what the experts recommend.

“Most people should exfoliate less in the summer than in the spring, since increased sun exposure and heat make the skin more sensitive and prone to irritation,” explained Micaela Bartash, a Physical Assistant and Co-Founder of Contour Aesthetics + Wellness.

If you must exfoliate, reach for a gentler option that can regenerate the skin without being too tough. However, the minute your skin starts to sting more than it feels clean, it’s time to fully put it away.

2. Swap Your Moisturizer (Yes, Really)

The thick, butter-rich moisturizer that saved you in January? It might be working against you come June. As humidity rises, your skin’s needs shift.

As Julia Barabas, a Medical Aesthetician at Bar Beauty Medical in Toronto, explains, “Shiny by mid-morning, makeup sliding, a few little bumps showing up, that cream’s too rich for the weather. I move people to something water-light. The SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 gel is a great summer swap, oil-free, and it still hydrates. But please don’t just stop moisturizing to fight the oil, that always backfires, you still need water in the skin, just lighter.”

The best options contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and aloe vera, and are your summer MVPs.

3. Introduce (or Recommit to) Vitamin C

If there’s one addition that earns its real estate in your summer routine, it’s vitamin C. This antioxidant powerhouse fights free radical damage from UV exposure, helps fade any lingering hyperpigmentation from winter skin, and gives you that lit-from-within glow.

“Vitamin C is beneficial for most skin types in the summer, helping to protect against environmental damage and brighten the skin,” Bartash says. “To maximize benefits and minimize irritation, we recommend using vitamin C in the morning and retinoids at night.”

Bonus: it actually boosts the effectiveness of your sunscreen.

4. SPF Is Non-Negotiable — But So Is the Formula

You already know you need sunscreen. But summer calls for a re-evaluation of which SPF you’re using. According to Dr. Louie Kim, a PhD chemical engineer and cosmetic chemist, “Three things: Film-former compatibility, UV filter stability, and finish.”

Dr. Kim further explains that the film-former compatibility determines how well your sunscreen meshes with your primer or foundation. “Many sunscreen polymers do not layer well with silicone-based primers or foundation,” Dr. Kim adds. “If you see pilling underneath your foundation, look for SPF with minimal or no dimethicone.”

“Chemical filters sit better under makeup. But some are not stable in heat as they tend to degrade within hours,” Dr. Kim further explains. “Mineral filters, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, are photostable, will not break down as easily as chemical filters. Mineral filter formulations in the past left white cast and felt heavy. Also some mineral filters can dehydrate skin that is already suffering under strong sun and air conditioning. Modern mineral formulations have improved.”

Lastly, the finish is key for a flawless look – and who doesn’t want that?

5. Don’t Skip Your Neck, Chest, and Hands

Skin prep doesn’t stop at your chin. Summer means exposed décolletage, bare arms, and hands in the sun — all areas that show sun damage faster than your face. Extend every step of your routine — exfoliation, serum, SPF — down to your chest and hands.

Trust me, future you will say thank you.

6. Hydrate From the Inside Out

The most underrated step in any skin prep routine costs almost nothing: water. As cliché as it may sound, staying hydrated is, in fact, a great way to prep your skin.

Dehydration shows up immediately on your skin — dullness, fine lines, uneven texture. In summer, you’re losing more through sweat, so you need to be more intentional. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day, and incorporate water-rich foods (watermelon, cucumber, celery) into your meals.

The Bottom Line

A summer glow isn’t luck, it’s about the prep. As Bartash mentions, “The biggest mistake people make when transitioning from spring to summer skincare is not adjusting their routine for increased heat, humidity, and sun exposure. ”

Start now, before the heat has a chance to throw your skin into survival mode, and you’ll spend the season actually enjoying your skin instead of troubleshooting it. Tweak your routine step by step, listen to what your skin is asking for, and don’t underestimate the power of a good SPF moment.
